Some Beneficial Features of the Unix Operating System

Some Beneficial Features of the UNIX Operating System CIS 155 Some Beneficial Features of the UNIX Operating System Safety issues have always been one of the major aspects of effective operation of human beings and systems invented and implemented by individuals all over the world in different periods of human history. The rise of the personal computer in the market is another potential threat; nowadays this threat comes from the internet through computers and other devices. As stated in the study by Garfinkel, Spafford, and Schwartz (2011), â€Å"in today’s world of international networks and electronic commerce, every computer system is a potential target† (p. 3). Computers and servers store information that can be damaged or retrieved by hackers that are not interested in keeping the operating system safe and sound. As such, the UNIX operating system can be considered one of the safest for your network activities with a minimum threat to your operating system and the computer in general. Benefits of the UNIX Operating SystemThere are many benefits of the UNIX operating system when viewed independently or in comparison with other operating systems. It is natural that UNIX has supporters and those who oppose the use and benefits of this OS. Nevertheless, everything depends on the purposes for which the operating system is installed and the activities for which it operates. In other words, the scope of commands makes UNIX one of the cheapest and compatible operating systems on the market (Afzal, 2008). With the option of being installed on any type of hardware regardless of the brand and price, UNIX is a viable option for any information technology professional. In addition, it is important to mention that UNIX became the basis for other operating systems generally referred to as the UNIX-like ones as they use UNIX codes and are rather competitive compared to non-UNIX-like systems (Afzal, 2008). Simplicity and Origins The UNIX operating system becam e one of the first attempts of the information technology age to make the computer popular among average users. The contribution was made in the form of this beneficial operating system that helps people all over the world get access to the internet and surf the web for hours without being under threat of getting a virus or damage to software. It is simple and user-friendly compared to other operating systems. One of the examples of simplicity in UNIX is the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), â€Å"an Internet standard for transferring electronic mail between computers [implemented by UNIX] with programs or systems called Message Transfer Agents† (Garfinkel, Spafford, and Schwartz, 2011, p. 347). The overall simplicity of the UNIX operating system can be traced in all its utility programs and other supportive agents that help the system to operate effectively without application of complicated schemes and codes. In other words, the simplicity of the system makes it attractiv e for programmers and people working with codes and programs to be written (Afzal, 2008). So, simplicity, toolbox, democratic approach, flexibility and stability, as well as virtual memory and cheap hardware are the basis for making this operating system an attractive solution for people that need a good and reliable OS for their personal or professional purposes. Open Standards and Portability The open standards and cross-platform portability of the UNIX operating system is another great beneficial feature of this operating system. As stated in the study by Liu, Yue, and Guo (2011), â€Å"since most of the networking protocols were initially implemented on UNIX and most of the Internet services are provided by server processes running on the UNIX operating system, UNIX has a fundamental and profound influence on computer networking† (p. 316). The impact of UNIX on the development of other operating systems and the overall progress of information technology so far has been und eniable. However, it is necessary to emphasize the applicability of this operating system to a small number of computers due to the users’ preferences.Different types of machines can be considered valid for the UNIX operating system, because it is treated as highly portable. Various computing machines can host UNIX, which would be only advantageous for them. The UNIX operating system was not coined for the expensive machines with the hardware changing every six months or less and upgrades available for even higher prices. Its flexibility and cross-platform portability make it an integral part of the democratic approach used by the creators of the operating system. Main-frame and micro-computers can benefit from the UNIX operating system and all its features (Afzal, 2008).Stability of the operating system is another beneficial feature that can be treated as a competitive advantage compared to other systems, such as Windows, with regard to maintenance and related procedures. Se curity features as well as processing power can also be treated as beneficial features of the UNIX operating system, especially when compared to other operating systems. Prerequisite software is something pertaining to all operating systems except the UNIX operating system, because it does not require additional upgrades in terms of hardware and software being absolutely cheap in maintenance and administration (Afzal, 2008).Besides, users can use UNIX on the cheapest and simplest hardware regardless of the brand. Most effective operating systems operate on the codes designed and introduced to the market by AT&T that created UNIX and contributed positively to the development of personal computers. The UNIX operating system is aimed at solving problems in the field of information technology: It uses simple tools, agents, and codes that are free of charge and helps the users operate effectively and safely on this basis (Afzal, 2008).Application programs compared to the simple tools by UNIX are too complicated to be beneficial for users and the overall effective performance of the system. The memory of the UNIX system is protected and considered to be as secure as the overall operating system and the number of programs that can be launched with no threat or compromise to other running programs in the same instance (Afzal, 2008). The benefits of the virtual memory should be described in another section, whereas it is necessary to mention that UNIX security, customization, and controls options make users select this operating program out of dozens of other existing ones.Open standards enable the UNIX operating system to share its codes and achievements with the users and other developers. As stated in the study by Raymond (2004), â€Å"Unix is still the only operating system that can present a consistent, documented application programming interface (API) across a heterogeneous mix of computers, vendors, and special-purpose hardware† (p. 8). Moreover, no othe r operating system can compare to its applicability and open standards as well as its cross-platform portability.Along with all other advantages of this OS, open standards attract more users that can value the portability of UNIX and its simplicity. Virtual Memory, Toolbox, and Customization The benefits of the UNIX operating system are numerous with the virtual memory and customization options as well as the authorization procedures and the general security of it all. So, the virtual memory of the UNIX operating system is on the high level: Low or medium levels of physical memory cannot compromise the virtual memory of the operating system (Afzal, 2008).So, users can launch many programs at once with no threat to the performance of the UNIX OS. The resources of the system are capable of running many programs being active which will not make the work of the entire system less effective. In other words, more complicated and proficient tasks can be performed with the help of other com mands and utility programs combined in the framework of UNIX (Afzal, 2008). Files are unified to make the operation of UNIX more efficient in terms of times needed to respond to commands and costs necessary to upgrade the overall system. As such, all types of data and devices are identified by UNIX as files, making it better and more appropriate for different purposes. Access to the computer is reached only via application of valid passwords and keys that are aimed at making UNIX rather protected and security-based (Afzal, 2008). Authentication is another tool that helps the system to operate effectively. Accounts and their owners are subject to the owner of the personal computer with the UNIX operating system to decide whether he or she wants anyone else to use the computer or not.The toolbox is designed in a way that makes the operations fast and efficient. Utility programs and commands are used to perform specific tasks; so, they are created for very particular purposes. This appr oach is contrasted to the one when commands and utilities serve for a variety of complicated tasks rather than simple ones. In other words, the UNIX operating system can be referred to as a box with all necessary tools that carry out their tasks in a corresponding manner (Afzal, 2008). Customization enables the users to adjust the system to their needs and purposes without being designed for particular settings and menus. As such, a user owning the UNIX operating system can change the options and settings unlike the user of other operating systems with pre-configured settings. Overall, the UNIX operating system is used all over the world due to the approach selected by its developers: they made it a free-access tool that can be used by any individual that has a personal computer and needs an operating system. Main-frame computers and mini-models of personal PCs can operate on UNIX without visible or invisible threats to their effectiveness. It can be used on different platforms regar dless of their origin and compatibility.UNIX is a well-documented system with everything stocked within that a user would need. References Afzal, A. Effects of Video Games on Children Essay

Although video games can increase aggressive behavior, they can improve memory and logistical thinking, as well as teach perseverance. Over the course of the last few decades video games have been integrated into the lives of our children. Video games are very appealing to children of all ages, and even to some adults. There is a variety of video games out there, and they range from educational to very violent. Because of this diverse selection of video games, there is a wide range of positive and negative side effects that these games can have on children. Because a large percentage of our children’s time is spent playing video games, there has been a lot of research in recent years on the positive and negative effects these games have on them. â€Å"Among elementary and middle-school populations, girls play for an average of about 5. 5 hours/week and boys average 13 hours/week,† (Gentile, D. A. 2004). Teenagers also spend a time playing video games. According to Media Analysis Laboratory (1998),†Eighty percent of teens said they played at least occasionally and the average amount of time spent gaming for the sample was 5 hours per week† (para. 19). Video game play has become not only a leisurely pastime for children, but for families also. When parents are not involved in some of their game play the outcome can become a little scary. Children who play video games with their families have a more pro-social attitude compared to their counterparts who play alone. Children who are less social or somewhat anti-social tend to develop aggressive tendancies when spending long hours gaming alone especially when violent video games are involved. Video games have been shown to increase aggressive behavior in some children. Neubert, S. P. (2004) said, â€Å"Individuals high in hostility are more likely to become aggressive when exposed to violent video games. † â€Å"Games in which the only positive outcome is the violent demise of enemies reinforces anti-social behavior. Violent video games desensitize people to aggression,† (Neubert, S. P. , 2004). According to a study done by Douglas A. Gentile. References Media Analysis Laboratory (1998). An Unfortunate Incident

Lily was very excited. Her 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle was almost complete. She easily fit the final pieces into the puzzle. She had taken two weeks to complete the puzzle and she proud of her work. As she stared at the puzzle on the dining table, she heard her mother call to her. Her mother announced that dinner was almost ready. She asked Lily to remove her puzzle and set the table for dinner. Lily was about to remove the puzzle when the phone rang. It was her classmate Judy. Lily could not wait to gloat about her newly-completed puzzle. She decided that dinner could wait for a few more minutes and proceeded to chat with her friend for fifteen minutes. Meanwhile her mother had emerged from the kitchen with a pot of hot soup. She was aghast to find the dinner table still in a mess, while Lily chatted happily on the phone. She turned to scold Lily but she accidentally knocked into the chair. The soup spileed over, directly onto the jigsaw puzzle. Lily came running the moment she heard her mothers angry voice but it was too late. The soup had ruined a good portion of the jigsaw puzzle. Lily burst into tears at the sight of the damaged puzzle. She regretted not listening to her mother and realised her mistake, but the damage had already been done. When Lily related the incident to me, I was saddened that my friends hard work had gone to waste. If I had been in her place, I would have placed the puzzle in a safe place before leaving the table. I would also have finished my chores before attending to the phone call.

Physical Development in Infancy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Physical Development in Infancy - Essay Example Infants grow and learn incredibly during their first five years. Parents and caretakers must be ready to provide active and intended care and attention to infants’ preschools years. Early learning at this stage must be considered to be of utmost importance since it forms the basis for future learning. In order for caregivers to provide proper and useful teachings to their young ones, it is imperative to understand child development. Every human being is unique developmentally and this makes development change a very basic truth in human growth. Universal principles of human development do exist but the fact remains that there are no two completely alike children. Differences among children are exhibited in the physical, social, emotional and cognitive patterns of growth. Children also show differences in their ways of interacting with the environment surrounding them, how they play, and their affection towards different things among many other factors. This means that some will show signs of happiness and energy most times while others may exhibit a personality of calmness all the time. Activity and quietness may also differ among different children. It is therefore important for caregivers to understand the patterns of development so as to be equipped to assist and offer attention to their children. This paper looks at the development of infancy from the physical point of view. Physical development refers to physical changes in the body. This entails changes in bone thickness, size, weight, gross motor, fine motor, vision, hearing, and perceptual development (Ruffin, 2009). According to Ruffin (2009), development means growth that happens in a child from the time of birth to adolescence. These changes happen in a sequence that is orderly in nature. This sequence involves emotional, physical and cognitive development. These changes occur in patterns that can be predicted depending with the age of the individual. They differ in timing

Language Use and Language Learning - Essay Example Furthermore other variables such as the environment, time and situation at the time of this study may not be constant through the ages. This report analyzes a study conducted to learn about teacher-student interaction. the lecture is given to students of grade 3 who are learning English as their second language. The teacher is a Pakistani national teaching in the Grammar School whose first language is Urdu. Data were analysed using grounded theory methodology following a step by step process. The teacher and student interaction was recorded and transcribed to be processed further. First a set of descriptive categories which were representative of classroom dynamics and interaction were identified. Initiation-Response-Evaluation, Forms of Feedbacks and Types of elicitation were identified. This helped in identifying the features and patterns of interaction in the class room. Mehan (1979) studied classroom dynamics and analysed the language used during classroom both by the teacher and the student. The interaction between the two sides was analysed as function role it played during a lesson. He discovered that teachers initiate an elicitation, the students respond, and then there is an evaluative interaction. These interactions were labelled Initiate-Response-Evaluate (IRE). In our classroom, the findings are similar.... And this independence is vital for learning. Response rate of the students is on the slower side, but this response latency can be a cause of stage fear and fear of public speaking in some students. In the transcript two concepts of learner repair can be seen from the responding side. First there is 'correction' from the teacher asking the student to repeat the text in the correct way. Then there is 'peer-repair' in which another student responds to the first student. This again re-emphasizes the openness being observed in the classroom as even students are encouraged to answer the queries. Evaluation took place after an initiation of the question had been responded by the student. The evaluation was usually accompanied by a question so that the teacher could properly understand the student's level of comprehension and in cases, to aid in further comprehension. Forms of Feedback Some of the forms of feedback that have been identified as being used by the teacher in this study are from-related comment, explicit correction and clarification. Form-related comment refers to positive or negative response (not correction) to previous statement. The use of a positive word 'good' is an example of this. Explicit correction refers to any linguistic correction of a previous utterance. The correction of 'he-stant' to 'hesitant' is an example of this. Clarification is a request from the student to the teacher or vice-versa to explain or clarify something. The example of clarification is students asking the meaning of certain words. Types of Elicitation Mehan (1979) identified four types of elicitations in the instructional phase of the lessons analysed. These elicitations help us know the teacher's

Is this unlawful discrimination Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Is this unlawful discrimination - Essay Example All employees have equal rights to religion at the workplace. The right to religion should be free and open to all such that one can choose the religion they want to be associated with. The equal employment opportunity act states that no employee should be discriminated based on national origin, sex, race, color, religion, or an employee acting according to his or her rights (Nkomo, Fottler, & McAfee, 2011). Yes Elaine was fired because of religious discrimination as she refused to convert to be a Baptist like other employees and the supervisor. Elaine has the burden of proof I would convict the defendant who is the human resource manager on claims of unlawful discrimination. The plaintiff can show that she was fired based on religious discrimination. The plaintiff can also confirm that she had all the necessary qualification for the job as she had worked for the last six years. And above all Elaine was protected by the equal employee opportunity act of 1972 (Nkomo, Fottler, & McAfee, 2011). This is unlawful discrimination because everyone has a right to freedom of

Segmentation, targeting & positioning - Essay Example The paper is about segmentation targeting and positioning strategies of consumer goods and evaluation of its effectiveness. The consumer goods we have taken here are sports products and the companies are Adidas and Nike. We all know the rivalry between these two sport giants. Nike has gained much attraction among the marketing expert after its ambush marketing strategy in Atlanta-Olympics 1996. This paper starts with the simple definitions and introduction on Marketing and than moves to the strategy section, where it discuss the latest strategic moves of these companies.Marketing is a process of planning executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals. (Kotler, Marketing Management, Pg 8).Every product available in market today has been targeted to a particular segment and the brand is positioned to fulfill the needs of that target group. Adidas and Nike both have secured a strong place in the sporting goods sector. They follow different strategic approaches to serve their consumer group and attract them."Adidas is one of the truly great global brands," said Mike Levy, founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of SportsLine.com and Chairman of Sports.com.Segmentation is an approach midway between mass marketing and individual marketing. Each segment’s of buyers are assumed to be quite similar in wants and needs, yet no two buyers are really alike.

Canterbury Tale (The Wife of Bath) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Canterbury Tale (The Wife of Bath) - Essay Example Medieval social standards from which that dark reality consisted were the reason of much injustice, horrible crimes, slavery, massive misery and ugly existence even in the most progressive geographical regions. Among those oppressed part of society were also women who served to men almost as slaves and only sometimes would have been given a possibility to appear equal or even stronger by absorbing money and power. The individual experience of the Chaucer’s tale main heroine and narrator allows to make an attempt to find how virtually and naturally Alison serves as an anchor to the unique woman’s progressive thinking which shows displeasure with the reality of relationship between sexes. Among the main themes of the tale are woman’s dominance and submissive role of the man as well as declaring and stating equality between men and women. Dark Ages are not by accident called so. It was a rough time due to the total and grand chaos on the territory of the modern Europe. Following two great events – rise of the Islam religion and decline of the Western Roman Empire under the barbarian urge Europe suffered a great and total transformation on all the levels. Therefore rational thought and antique traditions of economic and political control remained lost until the early Renaissance which is exactly the times of Chaucer who can be called English version of Boccaccio both of whom are main authors of the main written documents of the early Renaissance . In the tale the author points out that chronologically it takes place in the times of King Arthur therefore it might be somewhere between 5th and 8th centuries while Islam appeared in the 6th. . Under the catast rophic eastern pressure European kingdoms created by such legendary and perhaps even historically mythological and cult icons like Arthur, William the Conqueror or Carl the Great with all their image honored war and battleship as the most sacred, holy and important crafts therefore

Criminal Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 5

Criminal Law - Essay Example For instance, false imprisonment may occur when an armed gang takes control of a bank or any other institution and orders everyone in the building to a certain room and locks them up without their will or consent. Kidnapping is a crime where a person transported from one place to another without his or her will, or confining a person to an isolated place by the use of force. The difference between false imprisonment and kidnapping is that in false imprisonment is the use of force and threat is practiced, though force and threat are elements of kidnapping it is far from kidnapping (Senjo, 2011). Kidnapping is a situation where an individual is restraint by circumstances that he or she will be exposed to serious body harm if the victim does not give in to the demands of the perpetrator. In false imprisonment, the victims are not transported to another location while in kidnapping the victim is transported. False arrest is a situation where a law enforcement officer without his or her legal consent detains a person. but in a case where a law enforcement officer makes an arrest to probable cause and shows that his or her action were supported by a probable cause then the law enforcement officer will bear no

Life of Pi Analysis Essay Example for Free

Life of Pi Analysis Essay Having just experienced the sinking of his family’s ship, and being put onto a life boat with only a hyena, Pi felt completely lost and alone. Then he met a familiar face from his family’s zoo, Pi saw the Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker onboard. His first reaction was to save the life of Richard Parker so that he may have a companion, and a protector aboard the lifeboat. Suddenly Pi realizes just what he is doing. He is saving the life of Richard Parker, by welcoming him, a 450 pound Bengal tiger, onto the small lifeboat. He experiences a change of heart when helping the tiger onto the boat. Pi realizes that he is now posing a threat on his own life. With Richard Parker on the boat, Pi is faced with not only the fight to survive stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but the fight to survive living with a meat eating tiger. The change of heart that Pi experiences might possibly mean that he is an impulsive thinker. It may mean that he often does something on impulse without thinking it through, and then later regrets his actions. Though he was having bad experiences onboard, Pi maintains his religious beliefs while on the life boat through his daily prayers. He takes time aside each day to say the prayers that he always would say. In one instance, he turns where he believes Mecca is located, and prays his traditional prayers towards Mecca. Pi also often states that he will include specific animals in his prayers, such as the zebra aboard his lifeboat, and the first fish that he ever killed. With Pi keeping his ritual prayers going, it helped him to survive. He made comparisons between that of Orange Juice, the orangutan, and the Virgin Mary, and would also often bring up Jesus on the cross. Truly, Pi’s religious faith remained strong throughout his journey on the Pacific Ocean.

Attitude Survey Essay Example for Free

Attitude Survey Essay In certain situations, it is important for psychologists to understand the attitudes of people on different issues. Attitude surveys are how psychologists gather information about attitudes of people. Then, they take this information and turn the results into empirical evidence to back up the theory or question that is impending. A person’s attitude can affect thought and behavior processes such as cognitive thinking, emotional reaction, and physical behaviors (Hogan, 2007). For my survey, I used the Likert method of attitude scale to develop my attitude assessment. I wanted to find what the attitude of smokers and non-smokers have about the smoking ban in restaurants. This paper will examine and discuss the development of my survey, administration process, scoring of the surveys, and the interpretation of the scores. Also, issues that I had while designing the survey will be discussed. Attitude Survey The development of my survey was taken from an issue that I personally was interested in because I am a smoker. When the ban first became a law, I heard many people, including myself; complain about the right to have a smoking section in restaurants for individuals who smoked. The ban has now been in effect for a few years, and I wanted to find out if smokers and non-smokers attitudes had changed on this issue. Survey Design In designing my survey, I used the Likert scale because I felt it would be the best way to gather the information I needed. This survey was designed to see how people view smoking in restaurants. These questions were answered by 6 different people, of which 3 were smokers and 3 were non-smokers. The surveyors were asked to answer each question by stating strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, or strongly disagree. The numerical scores for each question range from-2 to +2. Administration, Scoring, and Interpreting Results Administration consisted of me going to neighbor’s doors and asking them eleven questions about the smoking ban. I wanted to make sure that there were not so many questions that it would take too long. The length of time administering the test helped in getting people to take the time to answer these few short questions. The neighbors I chose were already acquainted with me as well, and that helped them to be comfortable and willing to answer my survey questions. For the scoring of the survey the lower the score the lower the satisfaction of the ban, and the higher the score implies the higher level of satisfaction. When I designed the survey I made sure that for each unfavorable answer of strongly disagree corresponded with a negative feeling towards the smoking ban. When interpreting the scores, usually it is better to have a good number of participants to answer the questions because it makes it more reliable to be able to look at the trends of how the questions are answered. Preliminary Design Issues Issues that I had were trying to get enough people to answer my survey questions. I also had an issue of how to figure the scores and put them into a scale. It took me a little time to understand how to correctly design and score. I also wanted to ask the right questions, as well as keep the survey questions short, so that people did not get tired of answering questions before the end however, still cover all the basic questions needed for this survey. I also did not want the questions to be as if I were repeating myself, so this took me a little while to figure out how to properly word my questions so to cover all the information I would need for scoring and interpretation. In conclusion, the survey I chose was to find out the attitudes of people on the smoking ban in restaurants. I used the Likert method of attitude scale for my design because I felt it was the best way to assess my selected issue. I tried to create questions that would cover cognitive factors, emotional responses, and physical behaviors in order to accurately score and interpret the attitudes about the smoking ban issue amongst smokers and non-smokers alike. What Is A Buffer Biology Essay

What Is A Buffer Biology Essay A  buffer  is an  aqueous solution  that has a highly stable  pH. If you add  acid  or  base  to a buffered solution, its pH will not change significantly. Similarly, adding water to a buffer or allowing water to evaporate will not change the pH of a buffer. A buffer is a substance in a solution that can neutralize either an acid or a base. A substance is said to be naturally buffered if it has a buffering action in its natural state .Buffers are used in chemistry to modulate and stabilize the pH of a solution. A buffered solution can be made in a variety of ways, most simply by creating a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base. Buffers are chemicals that, when added to water, tend to maintain a certain pH. This is due to the buffers ability to either accept or donate a proton (hydrogen ion, H+) or hydroxyl (OH-) to keep the pH in a certain range. Buffers are different than strong acids and bases because buffers do not donate all of their protons or hydroxyls within their buffering range. A buffer is a substance, usually a salt, that can bind with either the positively-charged hydrogen ion of an acid or the negatively-charged hydroxide ion of a base. If a solution is buffered, acids or bases can be added to the solution without changing its pH as drastically as if the acid or base were added to an unbuffered solution Natural Buffers A solution is said to be naturally buffered if it contains buffering compounds as it exists in nature. Blood is an example of a naturally buffered solution. Blood must maintain a pH close to 7.4 in order to carry oxygen effectively and contains compounds that react to acids or bases in order to neutralize them.   PREPERATION OF BUFFER A compound can buffer the pH of a solution only when its concentration is sufficient and when the pH of the solution is close (within about one pH unit) to its pKa.   To make a buffer you must first pick a compound whose pKa  Ã‚   is close to the pH   you want for the solution, and then decide what the buffer concentration should be.   Typically, buffer concentrations are between 1 mM and 200 mM, depending on the desired ionic strength and the buffering capacity required.   If the pH is expected to decrease during the experiment, choose a buffer with a pKa  slightly below the working pH.   Conversely, if the pH is expected to increase during the experiment, select a buffer with a pKa  slightly above the working pH.   Having decided on the total buffer concentration, you must adjust the ratio of the protonated and unprotonated forms of the buffer in your solution so as to give the desired pH.   Typically, buffers are composed of   weak acids and their salts, or w eak bases and their salts.   If the protonated form is uncharged, it is an acid (like acetic acid), and its unprotonated form is a salt (e.g., sodium acetate).   Conversely, if the unprotonated form is uncharged it is a base (like Tris base), and its protonated form is a salt (e.g., TrisHCl). Four practical ways to make a buffer are described below: The Slow and Stupid Method    To avoid adding extra salt to a solution, prepare a buffer composed of an acid and its salt by dissolving the acid form of the buffer in about ~60% of the water required for the final solution volume.   Adjust the pH using a strong base, such as NaOH.   When preparing a buffer composed of a base and its salt, start with the base form and adjust the pH with strong acid, such as HCl.   After the pH is correct, dilute to just under the final solution volume.   Check the pH and correct if necessary, then add water to the final volume.   Advantages:  Easy to understand.   Disadvantages:  Slow.   May require lots of base (or acid).   If the base (or acid) is concentrated, it is easy to overshoot the pH. If the base (or acid) is dilute, it is easy to overshoot the volume.   Ionic strength will be unknown. Adding a strong acid or base can result in temperature changes, which will make pH readings inaccurate (due to its dependence to temperature) unless the solution is brought back to its initial temperature.   (2)The Mentally Taxing Method   Using the buffer pKa  , calculate the amounts (in moles) of acid/salt or base/salt present in the buffer at the desired pH.   If both forms (i.e., the acid and the salt) are available, convert the amount required from moles to grams, using the molecular weight of that component, and the weigh out the correct amounts of   both forms.   If only one form is available, you can prepare the buffer by adding all of the buffer as one form, and then adding acid or base to convert some of the added buffer to the other form.   Decide what the total concentration of buffer will be in the solution, and convert the concentration to amount (in moles) using the volume of solution, and then to grams, using the molecular weight of the buffer form available.   Then calculate the amounts (in moles) of each form that will be present in the final solution, using the buffer pKa  Ã‚  and the desired pH.  Ã‚   Then calculate how much strong acid or base must be added to convert enough of the buffer form added to the other form,   to give the correct amounts of each form at the pH of the final solution.   Dissolve the buffer and strong acid or base in slightly less water than is required for the final solution volume.   Check the pH and correct if necessary.   Add water to the final volume. Advantages:  Fast.   Easy to prepare.   Additional pH adjustment is rarely necessary, and when necessary, the adjustment is small. Ionic strength easily calculated. The Two Solution Method   Make separate solutions of   the acid form and base form of the buffer, both solutions having   the same buffer concentration (and ionic strength, if required) as the concentration of total buffer in the final solution.   To obtain the desired pH, add one solution to the other while monitoring the pH with a pH meter.   Advantages:   Easy to do.   Disadvantages:  Requires both forms of buffer.   The required solution volumes are proportional to the ratio of buffer components in the final solution at the desired final pH, so making equal amounts of each form may waste a lot of one solution. The Completely Mindless Method   Find a table of the correct amounts of acid/salt or base/salt required for different pHs, and dissolve the components in slightly less water than is required for the final solution volume.   Check that the pH and correct if necessary. Add water to the final volume.   Advantages:  Easy to do (with appropriate table).   Convenient for frequently prepared buffers.   Disadvantages:  May be impossible to find table.   Table may be incorrect.   Requires both forms of buffer.   Component amounts from table will need to be adjusted to give the buffer concentration and volume in your solution. Ionic strength is unknown.   Common Buffer Preparations   Buffer Stock Soln Components Amount per Liter Soln. Conc. Significance:- An important number for any aqueous solution is its pH. The pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions (often represented as a hydronium ion, which is a water molecule with an extra proton attached). Anything with a pH of less than 7 is considered to be acidic, and a solution that has a pH of greater than 7 is basic. Pure water, which has an equal amount of acid and base in it, is defined as having a pH of 7. Identification:- Buffered solutions are used to make a solution that exhibits very little change in its pH when small amounts of an acid or base are added to it. A buffer can be made by addition of a weak acid and its conjugate base to a solution. Alternately, a weak base and its conjugate acid can be used. Buffers are most effective when the amounts of the weak acid/base and the conjugate base/acid are usedgenerally to be effective, neither quantity should be more than 10 times that of the other. Control of ph by buffer Buffers are chemicals that, when added to water, tend to maintain a certain pH. This is due to the buffers ability to either accept or donate a proton (hydrogen ion, H+) or hydroxyl (OH-) to keep the pH in a certain range. Buffers are different than strong acids and bases because buffers do not donate all of their protons or hydroxyls within their buffering range. Background:- The measure of pH gives the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. Pure water has a pH of 7.0 and has an equal balance of hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions. The pH will be lower if an acid is added and higher if a base is added. For various purposes, it is useful to add a buffer so that the pH remains constant even if an acid or base is added to the solution. Buffers are used to maintain constant pH. Buffer Equilibrium:- Different buffers  work  at different pHs. A buffer is most efficient at maintaining a constant pH when the pH equals its acid dissociation constant, its pKa. At this pH, the buffer consists of an equal solution of protonated and de-protonated conjugate base. This often denoted by a theoretical buffer molecule, AH, dissociating into a proton, H+, and the conjugate base, A-. The pKa is determined by the pH where the concentration of AH equals the concentration of A-. Buffering Acids:- At its pKa, a buffer can maintain a constant pH by accepting free protons. Adding an acid to the solution, such as HCl, will cause free protons to enter the solution. The conjugate base will accept the free protons, causing the pH to be unchanged. The solution will remain at the same pH as long as there is enough conjugate base to accept the additional protons. The reaction can be written as the dissolution of the acid: HCLH+ + Cl- leading to free H+ in the solution. The further reaction with the buffer occurs: H+ + A- HA. This removes the free protons and constant pH is maintained. Buffering Bases:- Adding a base such as sodium hydroxide to a solution will cause an increase in the hydroxyl concentration. In a buffered solution, the protons attached to the undissociated buffer are donated to the solution, forming H2O with the free hydroxyls. This counters the effect of the base and maintains the pH of the solution as long as there is undissociated buffer available in the solution. In this case, the reaction can be written as the dissolution of the base: NaOH Na+ + OH- leading to the second reaction of OH- + HA H2O + A-. Different Buffers:- Different buffers have different pKas and can be used to buffer solutions at a wide range of pHs. Chemicals used as buffers often have the ability to donate or accept multiple protons or bases. These buffers hence have two or more different pKas corresponding to how many protons or hydroxyls per molecule they can donate or accept. Different buffer molecules can be combined to form customized buffer ranges. For a list of biological buffers, see Resources. WORKING OF BUFFER When hydrogen ions are added to a buffer, they will be neutralized by the base in the buffer. Hydroxide ions will be neutralized by the acid. These neutralization reactions will not have much effect on the overall pH of the buffer solution. When you select an acid for a buffer solution, try to choose an acid that has a pKa  close to your desired pH. This will give your buffer nearly equivalent amounts of acid and conjugate base so it will be able to neutralize as much H+  and OH-  as possible. PURPOSE OF BUFFER:- A buffer solution is used to resist changes in pH when a certain amount of strong acid or base is added to the solution. It is an important part of biological systems in living organisms as well as in the laboratory. The reason a buffer works to maintain a certain pH is that the concentration of weak acid and base is kept in a specific ratio in line with the acid titration curve. The titration curve A titration curve is a graph that relates the relative concentrations of a weak acid to its conjugate base by graphing pH versus amount of base added. In the region of the titration curve where the graph is almost flat, the pH changes very little with added base and therefore this would be a good pH for the buffer. Buffer in cells and blood The main buffer found in living cells is the H2PO4/HPO4- buffer pair. In blood, the main buffer is the H2CO3/HCO3- pair. This system relies on dissociation of carbonic acid, which has a pKa of 6.37. The pH of human blood needs to remain at around a pH of 7.4 and therefore the system also involves carbon dioxide transported to the lungs. Phosphate buffer The phosphate buffer is based on tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane or TRIS. This buffer has a pKa of 8.3 and is found both in living organisms as well as used in the laboratory. It is a good buffer because it does not tend to interfere with the system being studied. Buffers in enzymatic reactions Laboratory methods to isolate an enzyme use buffered solutions because an enzyme can only function in a narrow pH range. Enzymes are very sensitive to pH as well as salt concentrations. Therefore, it is important to use a buffer with a very good buffering capacity for the specific pH in order for the experiment to be successful. Physiological consequences Respiration plays a role in buffering of blood by controlling the rate of respiration depending on the need for hydrogen ions or increased acidity. Increasing the rate of respiration is helpful when there is a buildup of hydrogen ions or acidity in the blood. The H+ ions bind to bicarbonate to form carbonic acid. This raises the level of carbon dioxide in the lungs. Increasing the level of respiration removes the excess carbon dioxide. Therefore, here the buffering system is used to keep pH level of the blood within the required narrow range. Features:- The pH of a buffered solution is defined by the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, which states that the pH of a solution is equal to the acid dissociation constant of the weak acid plus the logarithm of the ratio of the concentrations of conjugate base to the weak acid. The acid dissociation constant is a number that defines the tendency of an acid to dissociate and form hydrogen ions. A strong acid will have a very low dissociation constant, whereas a weaker one may have a significantly higher one, around 5. Considerations:- Buffered solutions have many applications in chemical manufacturing for processes that require a specific pH range to  work. This is also true for the human body, which contains many enzymes that are only functional at a specific pH. Outside of this range, the enzymes are either unable to catalyze reactions, or in some case will misfold and become broken down; thus, a mixture of carbonic acid and bicarbonate is used by the body to keep pH of the blood between 7.35 and 7.45.

Momadays Angle of Geese and Other Poems Essay -- Momadays Angle of

Angle of Geese and Other Poems MOMADAY had been writing poetry since his college days at University of New Mexico, and this volume incorporates many of his earlier efforts. Momaday admired the poetry of Hart Crane as an undergraduate, and early poems like "Los Alamos" show Crane's influence. Under the tutelage of Yvor Winters at Stanford Momaday developed an ability to provide clear, precise details and images in his verse. As a graduate student at Stanford, Momaday absorbed the influence of an eclectic group of poets including Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, Paul Valery, Charles Baudelaire, and Frederick Goddard Tuckerman, the subject of Momaday's PhD dissertation. What these poets had in common, at least in the eyes of Momaday and Winters, was the practice of establishing a conceptual theme, but then giving it meaning with concrete, sensory images. The title poem, "Angle of Geese," shows how Momaday employs sensory experience as an integral part of the message, not just as ornament. In the first part of the poem, Momaday relates his reactions to the funeral of a ...

The Peoples Republic of China :: China Essays

One country that has a rich cultural history, a large population and some of the grandest mountain ranges in the world is China. This country is the third largest one and contains the world's largest population. It is also home to one of the very first recorded civilizations. Thanks to its large mountains it is rich in natural resources that had come up from the earth. China produces a large variety of things from steel, to cameras and synthetic materials. Electricity generation is one of the largest in the world. It's government is one of the oldest on earth starting in 1726. All of these things make up China, so let’s go into more detail by starting with geography.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  China is officially the People's Republic of China and is located in eastern Asia. To it's north are several countries including Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. It shares borders to the west with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and India. To the south is Bhutan, Myanmar, Veitnam, and Laos. Almost the entire east side of China is bordered by water. There are over 3,400 offshore islands, with Hainan in the South China Sea as being the largest of them all. China is about 3,696,100 square miles large not including the Republic of China. China is a very mountainous country with 43% of all land is classed as mountainous terrain. Also China has some of the largest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest and K2. All the mountains have enclosed numerous plateaus and basins. Those areas are rich in water and mineral resources.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  China’s population is made up of mostly people under 30. The government wanted to try to control the population but was unable to. Thus China has the largest population in the world and is very crowded. Most of the people are distingueshed not by racial characteristics but by religion or language. The current population is 1,306,000,000 and increasing at an incredible rate. China speaks a language called Putongua and is known to most by Mandarin. China is trying to modify its written language to simplify it. China has two main religions: (1) Christianity (2) Buddhist. Both of these religions practice their religion openly.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Because of China’s land diversity, it is rich in mineral resources and has an ample amount of nearly any resource known to man. It has about 20 billion metric tons of petroleum and 11 trillion metric tons of Steel.

Myths, Dreams and the Epic of Gilgamesh :: Epic of Gilgamesh Essays

The Epic of Gilgamesh, a masterpiece of world literature, is considered to be one of the oldest epics in the world. It is called an epic, but it is really a myth. In order to be able to understand a myth, it is necessary to have an historical point of view from two perspectives, so to speak, an outer and an inner one. The outer one concerns the necessity to understand the historical form in which the archetypes appear, the historical background to which the myth is related - in our case, the Babylonian culture and religion. The inner aspect concerns the essential problems of the time, with which that particular epoch struggled consciously, or in which it was unconsciously involved. Although this is primarily a scientific task, I believe that it is nevertheless a matter of immediate necessity for us to understand such documents humains in relation to our own life, for all the ages live in us, and we cannot really understand ourselves unless we know our spiritual roots. What particular age and what spiritual contents are evoked in us by the unconscious is, to a certain extent, a question of individual fate. Since Western culture is based to a great extent on Judaism and Christianity, Babylonian culture as one of their roots may be looked upon as of immediate psychological interest to us all. The archetypes live in their realm, beyond time and space. This builds the bridge of understanding between men of all ages, and makes it possible to realize that we ourselves with our essential problems are bound up in the continuity of the eternal problems of mankind, as they are mirrored in myths. But the form in which the archetypes appear, their garments so to speak, depends on the historical conditions: the symbols in which they appear change. In the human being these changes correspond to the development of human consciousness. Thus the myths, in my opinion, represent not only eternal archetypal events, but a certain level of the development of human consc iousness. During my work on this remarkably rich material this connection thrust itself more and more into my mind, so that I should like to define it as the basic idea, as the starting point of my attempt to explain this myth. It was only in 1872 that scholars first became aware of this myth, when the English Assyriologist George Smith made public "The Chaldean Account of the Deluge," as he titled his translation of the eleventh tablet of the epic.

Health and Nutrition Worksheet Essay

Use Ch. 1, 2, & 3 of Visualizing Nutrition, supplemental course materials, the University Library, the Internet, or other resources to answer the following questions. Your response to each question should be 75 to 100 words. 1.What is nutrition? Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? For me nutrition would be eating the right types of food in order to maintain your body healthy. Nutrition is very essential to our daily lives because without proper nutrition our bodies would be fully functional. Either you would be tired or weak everyday no matter how much sleep you get or how long you’re at the gym for, again without the proper nutrition’s your body wouldn’t be fully functional. 2.What is the connection between nutrition and health? The connection between nutrition and health is that no matter what you do, everything starts with a foundation. In a house the â€Å"basement† would be the foundation, the part that’s holding the house up. But with our health, proper nutrition would be our foundation to a healthy lifestyle. 3.What is the relationship between poor nutrition and disease? The relationship between poor nutrition and disease is that with poor nutrition you are going to be more prone to catching a disease because your body is going to be weak and isn’t going to stand a chance against a virus. 4.What does it mean to eat a balanced diet? Why is food choice important for good nutrition? For me a balanced diet would be eating the right types and amounts of foods and drinks to help your body get the right amount of nutrition it needs, this means that if your body needs just 1 cup of wheat and 2 cups of fruits then that’s what you’re getting, not more or not less. Food choice is important for good nutrition because if you don’t get the right food that will satisfy your â€Å"pyramid† then you’re going to have too  much of one thing and not enough of the other which will lead to an unbalanced diet. 5.Why is physical activity important to a person’s health? What changes, if any, should you make to ensure you get enough physical activity? Physical activity is important because it can improve your health and reduce the risk you developing certain kind of diseases. Also by being active it will also help you stay fit and prolong your life rather than just being at home and being a couch potato which will hurt you a lot, because I am in the military I believe that I am already fit, sometimes I even think I’m getting too much physical activity, we workout 5 days a week and 4 out of the 5 days we work out in the morning and afternoon. 6.What influences your food choices? Why? What influences the food I pick would be a variety of things such as how it smells, looks, taste and most of all my culture. I’m Puerto Rican so I was brought up eating rice and beans for me food wasn’t food unless rice and beans were included. But around ten years old I moved to New York where its multicultural so that’s where I started tasting all different kinds of food such as Italian, Dominican, and real Chinese food, and realized that in order for something to be ‘food’ rice and beans’ didn’t have to be included. What also influences the food I pick depends on my son, me and my wife wont usually cook something that he doesn’t like but he’s so picky at times that we just make something healthy for all of us and he won’t eat it, I would have to feed it to him in order for him to eat it. 7.What is the difference between digesting protein and carbohydrates? Which would make you feel fuller longer? Why? The difference between digesting protein and digesting carbohydrates is that proteins are digested into amino acids while carbohydrates are digested into simple sugars. Also carbohydrates are converted into glucose which are then stored in the body and Proteins are broken down into amino acids which then are used to build and repair body tissues. I believe that protein will make you feel fuller because you don’t have to eat as much in order to satisfy your hunger. 8.How does today’s society affect our nutritional habits? Our society today affects our nutritional habits tremendously It’s so hard to control our food portion because of the food industries in the United States. Right now for example we could go down the street to McDonalds and order a Big Mac meal. Now the Big Mac alone has about 550 calories but then they give you some fries with the Big Mac and a fountain drink. Now if you were brought up like how I was, which was your mother or father yelling at you and telling you, â€Å"you need to eat everything on my plate†, then of course you are going to inherit those habits and you’re going to be eating everything they give you, and that of course unhealthy. You’re going to be eating a lot more than what you’re supposed to, making us gain weight and even have health issues. 9.How are nutrients used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP)? Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, acts as a source of fuel within your cells. Formed from a series of chemical reactions, carbohydrates, proteins and fats can all be converted into ATP following digestion. One type of food that provides a source of ATP is meat and fish. These foods contain several animal cells, with each cell containing preformed ATP. The nutrients found within meats and fish may also provide a source of ATP within your body. Upon consumption, the fatty acids and proteins in meats and fish are digested and absorbed. If your body requires an immediate source of energy, these nutrients are used to make ATP within your own cells, helping to fuel your body. 10.Consider your personal dietary habits. What are some modifications you might make to promote good health? My personal dietary habits are eating only two meals a day and just drink water or powerade throughout the rest of the day. Which I know now that is a terrible idea, skipping meals isn’t good for us. In them two meals I eat a day, since I’m always at the gym I eat a lot of meat to intake a lot of protein, and with the meat I would eat about 1.5 cups of rice and .5 cups of beans, which is diffidently not maintaining a balanced diet at all. Some modifications I might make to promote good health would be to not skip meals, and maintain a balanced diet, not too much and not too less.

Duquesne Education Essay

I reserve always held the belief that apart from scholastic excellence, a mans didactics is incomplete if certain values and ideals argon not inculcated into him. Having a storey is slimy if the degree you go does not have a positive effect on you. One question I bear myself is why must I be educated? Should we be educated because we requirement to bandaging a good degree that give enable us appropriate a good job or what? I offer my view of admittedly discipline below. True education is not all slightly grades and certificates.True education must deepen who we are, affecting how we think. We should figure that as educated people, we should give back to the society. We are educated so that we nooky birth a positive change in our society and be make better mortals than we were before we were educated. This should be the goal of sure education In my quest to disembowel a university education, I have had to devote these considerations before me. For one thing, I ripe do not deprivation to go to a school for the mere usage of backing a degree.I want to be educated in an milieu where I depart be multipurpose not only for myself but the society. I want a university where I butt end get the kindred degree and settle down have the platform of forming values that will make me a better person. I checked programs offered by different universities and how this helps in making me a better person in the future. Of all the universities I checked, I found the programs and the environment of Duquesne most able for me and having a degree from the university will make me more successful person in future. How am I certain of this?To find with, the environment and programs offered by the university makes the scholar generalise his/her role in the society. The various humane programs instill some values into the student and help to shape his view about life and ones blood with his fellow man. In addition this, you jackpot not graduate from Duqu esne without learning responsibility. Your ideals will be transformed and this prepares you for the life forrader of you. I will also be able to develop relationships that will enchant my life, people who believe in the same cause.
